It’s the merry, merry month of May, and the first book in the Edgemont series is on sale again! So far, I haven’t rescued any animals this month—other than my own, that is. Our little shepherd mix (this is a best guess) hurt herself playing with her beloved tennis balls. We didn’t see what happened. Just heard a loud yelp when she chased after one into a bush. She seemed okay immediately afterward, but some odd symptoms developed over the next couple of hours—some drooling, favoring her tongue, not wanting to chew her food. When she wouldn’t drink water, I swallowed back my panic and called the emergency vet. They encouraged me to bring her in since they’d been seeing a lot of snake bites recently, and this was a possibility. Thankfully, that turned out to not be the case with her. She had jabbed her tongue on a bush stem and traumatized a salivary gland. A couple of anti-inflammatories later, she was back to normal.
The moral of this tale? I don’t know if there is one, but I will advise everyone to be aware of your surroundings and watch out for those fur babies. Around here it’s getting hot, and with the heat, snakes can be on the move. We’re very careful when our dogs (and us humans) are in the yard. I’m not trying to turn snakes into villains. They play an important role in the ecosystem. They are just doing their thing, most aren’t venomous, and as long as we all mind our own business—and steer clear of each other—everything is fine. (Also, watch out for those bushes when plunging in headlong to fetch a ball!)
Progress on Book 3 continues! More on that next month.
May your May continue to be very merry.
Take care!
